LEARNING SCHEDULE
Learning the Arab percussion (Darbouka, Riqq, Daff, Bendir, Qraqeb …) is an exciting adventure that can be adjusted according to the time and the objectives of each practitioner. Here is a guide that adapts to your motivations and your availability. This plan is based on progressive learning, but you can adjust it according to your pace and your priorities.
If you are a beginner, the main objective is to acquire the technical bases of each instrument and understand the fundamental rhythms of the Arab world.
Estimated duration: 3 to 6 months
- Goals :
- Familiarization with the various percussion (Darbouka, Riqq, Daff, etc.).
- Learning basic sounds (hand approach on the instrument).
- Introduction with simple rhythms: Maqsoum, Baladi, Saïdi …
- Slow and regular practice of rhythms and transitions between the different notes and sounds.
- Recommended time: 30 to 60 minutes per day
- 15 to 30 minutes of technique (simple beats, coordination exercises).
- 15 to 30 minutes of study of rhythms.
Once you have mastered the basics, you can start working more complex rhythms and refine your technique. It’s also time to learn to play with other musicians.
Estimated duration: 6 to 12 months
- Goals :
- Learning complex rhythms and variations on traditional rhythms.
- Work musicality and improvisation.
- Develop the ability to play in a group, understand interactions with other instruments.
- Master the different striking techniques (such as the Riqq’s precise bearings or strikes).
- Recommended time: 1 to 2 hours per day
- 30 minutes of revision of known basic and rhythms.
- 30 to 60 minutes of practice of new complex rhythms and technique.
- 30 minutes of group work or with a recording to practice playing in synchronization.
At this point, the goal is to play with fluidity, to deepen your understanding of rhythms and improvisation, and to play complete compositions.
Estimated duration: 1 to 3 years
- Goals :
- Deepening of complex rhythms and patterns.
- Exploration of improvisation, especially in traditional and modern Arabic music contexts.
- Ability to play on long pieces, with fluid transitions between the different parts.
- Develop a personal style.
- Recommended time: 2 to 4 hours a day
- 1 hour of advanced technique and control of instruments.
- 1 hour of improvisation and musical interaction.
- 1 to 2 hours of group or support games, recording compositions.
- Variation of time: if you run out of time on certain days, try to compensate with longer or more intensive sessions during the days you have more.
- Motivation: Set short and long-term goals to keep your motivation. For example, a goal can be to learn a new pace each month or participate in a JAM or a concert in the 6 months.
- Active listening: Listen to Arabic music recordings to immerse yourself in rhythm and culture. This can speed up your learning and inspire you.
- Patience and perseverance: like all learning, regularity is key. Even a few minutes each day are enough to make great progress.
